Urban bird control is becoming one of the most rapidly expanding areas of our wildlife control service. Bird dropping accumulations not only pose a health and safety risk, they also create an unfavorable image for business owners or homeowners. We handle both commercial and residential bird problems using a variety of programs for nuisance bird control.
RETAIL STORAGE AREAS
GAS STATION CANOPIES
Birds such as pigeons, sparrows, and starlings can become a real nuisance when they decide to use your structure for nesting and roosting sites. The mess associated with their droppings and nesting materials is never pleasant, and the presence of mites and other parasites that exist in bird nests are a definite health concern. There are a variety of methods used for bird control, and every situation requires a different approach due to construction styles and layout. Other factors include the desired level of bird control requested by the property owner, and of course any limitations associated with cost factors.
We can provide services for a wide customer base, ranging from small homes and garages to large commercial structures. Machine sheds, parking garages, truck loading docks, churches, retail stores, gas stations, restaurants, and many other structures are often used by birds for roosting and nesting sites. Birds may be tolerated in some areas, but control measures are often necessary at certain locations. Some roost areas can be eliminated by modifications to the areas the birds are sitting on. Others may require netting to prevent birds from accessing the roost areas. We also install chimney caps, and can add screening to existing chimney caps to keep birds out of your fireplace or furnace. Gable vents (attic) often need screens replaced, and we offer standard screening for birds, or an optional heavy wire mesh to prevent squirrels or other animals from gaining access into your home through the vents.
We have our own towable boom lift which allows us to reach about 3 stories high to install screens over holes in eaves, or to access other tall areas that need attention.
NOTE: Regardless of claims by advertisements, our years of experience working with birds has shown devices such as fake owls, sound devices, ultrasonic repellers, and bird gels have very limited effectiveness. These devices have an extremely short-term effect. Birds quickly become accustomed to them, and will roost right on the fake owls and other devices, even covering them with droppings just to humiliate you. Most gel applicants have a very limited effect as they quickly become covered with dust and feathers, rendering them useless unless re-applied on a very frequent basis.
BIRD POOP IS BAD!
NEST AND ROOST SITES
Many cities are experiencing an increase in the number of large feral pigeon flocks, which is causing problems for commercial building owners, property management firms, and even homeowners. The acid in bird droppings is very corrosive, and causes damage to roofs, signs, metal, and any painted surfaces. Droppings often clog gutters and roof drains, causing water damage and other related expenses. The droppings also create a health and safety hazard. We offer several methods of bird control, depending on the structure, location, and desired result of the property owner.
Pigeons and other birds are attracted to areas that provide safe roosting and nesting sites. The above right picture is a cavity in a gas station canopy. The pigeons gained access into the cavity through 8 inch diameter holes that were cut into the sheet metal by electricians when installing lights. One of the access holes is visible at the upper right of this photo. The photo was taken at night when the pigeons were roosting. The canopy is 60 x 30 feet, and the cavity runs around the entire outer edge, providing a very large area for nesting and roosting. The flock grew to about 300 birds within a couple years, and the accumulation of droppings clogged gutters and collected around the gas pump islands. The canopy also had mice and rats which were eating the eggs and baby pigeons. A complete little ecosystem, but not exactly the ideal location.
Some of our pigeon control programs include a flock abatement process. We use specially designed pigeon traps to capture many of the resident flock before sealing or performing other product installations for bird control. Trapping is NOT an effective control measure UNLESS the trapping program is followed up by sealing nesting and roosting sites, or installing products which eliminate roosting on ledges, parapets, signs, or beams.
